THE STOLEN Review - Liz Braswell

The Stolen (Nine Lives of Chloe King)The Stolen by Liz Braswell
My Recommended Age Group: Young Adult to Adult
Released: August 31, 2004
Other work: The FallenThe Chosen (Nine Lives of Chloe King, Volume Three)
Our Rating:

From Goodreads:

She argues with her mother. She occasionally skips class. And she alternately crushes on two totally different boys.
But Chloe King is by no means your typical teenager. The girl can scale buildings and see in the dark. Sometimes, at night, she even likes to leap from rooftop to rooftop. Yes, Chloe has the instincts and ability of a cat. And that makes her unique indeed.

It also makes her a wanted woman.

Because the Order of the Tenth Blade does not deal kindly with people like Chloe. It stalks them. Preys upon them. And wants many of them -- like Chloe, for instance -- dead.

My thoughts:

Have you ever come across those series where the first book makes you think, "Hmm, this is going to be good!"  Then you pour through the second book and just sit speechless for a bit?

Yep, that's what happened to me this weekend.  I recently finished reading The Fallen, the first book in The Nine Lives of Chloe King.  I was left wondering after that book so went and found the second book.  Just as the first was, THE STOLEN, the second book in this series, was a quick read and packed with enough action and emotion to make me lose myself completely in the story.

The Fallen introduces us to Chloe King, our smart, spunky, and slightly feline heroine of the series.  She discovers within the story that she is a member of the ancient race of the Mai, and feline race whose existence has been recorded since the time of the ancient Egyptians.  Hunted by the human assassins, The Order of the Tenth Blade, Chloe discovers that her life is in jeopardy shortly after discovering that her new abilities exceed simple cat-like reflexes.

Continuing the story in THE STOLEN, Liz Braswell explains more about the Mai and their history.  We get to learn who they are, where they come from, and what has happened to the mighty race within its recent history.  Schooled in Egyptology herself, Braswell really gives the story a lot of color and realism with the ancient myths.  If I had to pick one thing, that would be what made THE STOLEN a complete winner for me.  It was perfectly evident that Braswell did her research and the way she explained and incorporated the ancient Egyptian gods made for a brilliant book that was not only easy to follow, but addictive as well.

Going beyond simple introductions to Chloe's life, we see the action kicked up a notch within the pages of THE STOLEN.  Now we discover that there is more behind The Order's need to slaughter the Mai.  More than that, it seems that darker plots arise around Chloe, making life even more dangerous for her and the people around her.

New characters and new scenery add an interest factor to the book that is sure to keep readers entertained throughout THE STOLEN.  Sometimes with a series, even though the story may be good, reading about the same characters in the same settings book in and book out can get old.  While not completely throwing us into a different world from the one we were accustomed to in The Fallen, Braswell, does change THE STOLEN up a bit, adding newer dimensions to keep us attached.

As I've mentioned in my review of The Fallen, this series, The Nine Lives of Chloe King, was picked up by ABC Family and will be premiering on that network June 14th.  Along with many others, I was one who thought the previews looked fantastic and then only later discovered that the show was based on a book series.  If you're one of those people who enjoy reading the books that go along with a show or movie, I suggest picking these up.  So far the story has proved to be fascinating with just the right amount of drama and otherworldly feline awesomeness.

Again, if you are looking for these books online, you may need to look under the author name Celia Thomson.  The combined edition (three books in one) comes out in June under Liz Braswell, but previous editions were published under the name Celia Thomson.

Nine Paths to Chloe King, Path 2, #NinePaths

I received another mysterious email on my MaiPad today.  Again, this one spoke of the Nine Paths Prophecy and the Circle of Strangers' ability to help find the Uniter.  Of course, risk is involved and with each path danger will increase, but if we are strong enough, we will overcome them.

Are you ready to continue on this amazing adventure with me?

In order to continue on this second path, I was given a picture of a statue depicting a cat with an earring.  In fact, I just recently did a post discussing this very statue and the history behind it.  Many of the questions I was asked to answer can be found in this post.

What is the ancient Egyptian name for the statue described above?
What warm celestial object was often associated with this entity (remember that the statue can really represent two different names)?
What city was the headquarters for this entity's followers?

Do you know the answers?

To continue your journey down Path #2, head over to ABC Family.  From there you will be able to follow your own set of clues and discover a secret message about the Mai.

Good luck (leave a comment if you need help) and remember, if you haven't done so already, you can head over to abcfamily.com/ninepaths and enter the password "circle" on the right hand side to win a circle charm and show your commitment to being a member of The Circle of Strangers and help find The Uniter!

Learning about Bastet - Chloe King #NinePaths

I spent most of the morning scratching my head and wondering what to talk about today.  Currently I have no reviews sitting in the wings (amazing) as I am in the middle of multiple books.  I thought about a Waiting on Wednesday post but I am so engrossed in the books that I am reading that I'm not waiting on too much at the moment.

So, what to visit about?

Right now, the biggest thing on my mind is the upcoming premier of The Nine Lives of Chloe King on June 14th from ABC Family.  Most of you have heard by now that ABC Family is having some fun with a game called The Nine Paths to Chloe King.  Some bloggers and journalists were sent game boxes with mysterious clues inside to help us play, but anyone and everyone can play the game simply by going to abcfamily.com/ninepaths.  Our first path started yesterday and I'm happy to announce that A Journey of Books has successfully completed it!  If you haven't already, head on over to play.  You can also use our super special password "circle" on the right hand side of the screen to win a circle charm while supplies last.

So, with part of my mind taken up by the game and the other part taken up by the events unfolding in the second book (The Stolen by Liz Braswell), I'm pretty much mainly think about cats, cat people, and kick butt heroines.  What does that leave us with?  Bastet and Sekhmet (same being in modern depictions), the ancient Egyptian cat goddess featured throughout The Nine Lives of Chloe King book series and likely throughout the show as well. The Mai are said to have come from Bastet although I'm early enough in the second book that this hasn't been fully explained yet.

Bastet

For those unfamiliar with ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses, Bastet is typically depicted as a house cat today with various bits of jewelry.  Earrings are the most common pieces although I have seen many depictions with a nose ring as well.  Often we see this goddess as a woman with the head of a cat.

The daughter of Amun Ra, the sun god, Bastet is typically associated with the sun when shown in lioness form (very early depictions).  Her house cat form, however, is often associated with the moon and her son Khonsu is the god of the moon.  This may explain why I often find my cats staring wistfully up at the moon in the middle of the night.  It's either that or the delicious looking moths flitting around the porch light.

Sekhmet
Protector of cats, the home, and pregnant women, Bastet is also known as the goddess of fire.  When known as Lady of the East, she is Bastet, protector as mentioned above, and docile (although it's uncertain how docile her followers in Bubastis were).  When known as Lady of the West, she is Sekhmet, still protector but now with a more aggressive streak.  I'm fairly certain that my bloodthirsty own kitties follow the Sekhmet way of living.

So, I'm thinking that's about it for now.  The information above has been learned from a few different sources, namely the two below.

http://www.egyptianmyths.net/bastet.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastet

What do you think - which aspect of Bastet (Bastet or Sekhmet) do the Mai represent?  Which would you represent?

The Nine Paths to Chloe King, Episode 1 #NinePaths

**Update: Would you like to get your own circle charm and become one of the Circle of Strangers? Go to abcfamily.com/ninepaths and enter "circle" into the box on the right as the password.**

Well who would have known what today had in store for me?  I thought I was waking up to have a perfectly normal day and then all of a sudden, BAM, plans changed.

Hmm...sounds a lot like a book I just read.  A book about a normal teenage girl who fell off a tower and then suddenly developed claws and an amazing ability to balance on electrical wires.  A book called, The Fallen by Liz Braswell, first in The Nine Lives of Chloe King.

Wouldn't you know, apparently ABC Family is doing a show based on the series and it's set to premier on June 14th.

From ABC Family:

In the one-hour scripted drama The Nine Lives of Chloe King, Chloe King is looking forward to celebrating her birthday with her friends and single mother, just like every other year…that is until she starts developing heightened abilities and discovers she's being pursued by a mysterious figure. Chloe soon learns she's part of an ancient race which has been hunted by human assassins for millennia —and that she may be their only hope for ultimate survival. The Nine Lives of Chloe King will be executive produced by Dan Berendsen (Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Hannah Montana: The Movie) and John Ziffren (Melissa & Joey, Make It or Break It) with Alloy Entertainment's Leslie Morgenstein (Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries) and Gina Girolamo. The drama is based on the book series The Nine Lives of Chloe King by Liz Braswell. The series will star Skyler Samuels (The Gates) as Chloe King; Amy Pietz (The Office, Caroline in the City) as Meredith King; Grey Damon (True Blood, Friday Night Lights) as Brian; newcomer Grace Phipps as Amy; Benjamin Stone (10 Things I Hate About You) as Alek; Alyssa Diaz (Southland) as Jasmine; and Ki Hong Lee (The Secret Life as the American Teenager) as Paul.

Unknown to most humans, there is another race amongst us called the Mai.  Years ago, a prophecy was found stating that The Uniter must be located.  This person will bring forth a life or death message that could potentially have dire consequences.  In order to find The Uniter, however, the Mai must reach out to The Circle of Strangers.  That's us.

Some strangers were sent wooden boxes with mysterious symbols carved within them.  Inside the box were clues that will eventually help lead us down the Nine Paths to help find The Uniter.  We can't do it alone, however.  Anyone can become a member of the circle - simply head on over to ABC Family and sign up.  Our journey through the nine paths will begin at ABC Family but will span out across the internet and the world as we work together to find The Uniter and the answers to all of our burning questions.

If you're interested in joining the cause, head on over to ABC Family and let it be known that you wish to be a member of the circle.  The first person to complete all nine paths will win the Grand Prize - a visit to The Nine Lives of Chloe King set.  There are also many other free gifts and extras available for The Circle of Strangers.  Follow the clues given you and together we will discover the truth.  In addition, check back often as we journey with you.  Who knows, perhaps part of our journey will help you!

THE FALLEN Review - Liz Braswell

The Fallen (Nine Lives of Chloe King)THE FALLEN by Liz Braswell
My Recommended Age Group: Young Adult to Adult
Released: May 25, 2004
Other work: The StolenThe Chosen
Our Rating:

From Goodreads:

She did her homework and got good grades, but she wasn't afraid to ditch class sometimes to hang out with her best friends. She slept at home, but otherwise avoided all human contact with her mom. The usual stuff.

Then she fell from San Francisco's highest tower, and her life changed. For starters, she died. And then, she woke up.

Now Chloe's life is anything but normal: Suddenly guys are prowling around her, she's growing claws, and someone's trying to kill her.

Luckily for Chloe, she still has eight lives to go.

My thoughts:

The Nine Lives of Chloe King: The Fallen; The Stolen; The ChosenI recently discovered that ABC Family is going to be doing a new show based on the book series, The Nine Lives of Chloe King.  The previews caught me by surprise and looked so interesting that I had to, of course, immediately go out and find the first book in the series.  I'm one of those people who, if I can, enjoy reading the book before watching the movie or show and since I knew I'd be watching the show, I just had to read the book.

Ooooo - it's a good book!

For those interested on June 7, 2011, the three books in the series, THE FALLEN, The Stolen, and The Chosen will be released as a single edition.  Should save readers a couple of bucks.  I, however, did not feel like waiting until June 7th, especially because the show starts on June 14th.  Instead, I shelled out my money and bought the first book, THE FALLEN, all by its lonesome and sat down to see what all the fuss was about.  Three hours later I finished it and went in search of book 2.

Three hours?  Now I read fast, but typically not that fast!  The only times I finish a book in three hours is when it's so good that I forgo snacking and potty breaks.  Well, let me tell you, after finishing THE FALLEN, I was famished and had to make a run for it.

Anyone that follows my reviews should know that I have a thing for cats.  Well, cats and girls.  Okay, in all honesty, animals and people along with any combination of the two.  I love shapeshifters of any sort whether the shifting is subtle or all out.  Rachel Vincent's Shifters series is one that I can think of in particular that hooked me on cats and now Liz Braswell's Nine Lives of Chloe King Series is continuing the kick.  Both authors have a fantastic way of turning an fairly ordinary character into a smart, and powerful feline girl that the reader just can't help but to fall in love with.

Obviously Chloe King is our main heroine in the series.  She was a fairly normal teenager until she decided to take a plunge off a tall tower.  The fall should have killed anyone else, but something is different about Chloe and it's only after her near-death experience that she begins to learn what.  With claws and a desire to run, leap, and balance from impossible heights, Chloe begins to exhibit more and more characteristics of our beloved felines.  Life would be great for the girl with her new found powers if it weren't for the crazy psycho that keeps showing up with sharp knives.  Seriously - lay off dude!

My favorite aspect of THE FALLEN was Chloe.  Braswell did an excellent job of making her feline without making it corny.  I've ready corny shapeshifter books and although they can still be good, the awesome factor of the story is diluted slightly by the feelings of, "Uhh...really?  I'm not believing it."  Braswell makes Chloe a truly believable character both in the form of her physical nature and her personality.  She's a teenager.  She's rebellious.  Aside from the dangerously sharp claws, I can see a lot of myself in her.  That's what makes her so easy to relate to.

If a great character doesn't do it for you, perhaps some nice action will.  Packed from the first page to the last, THE FALLEN leaves the reader guessing and wondering throughout the book.  The action of fighting for her life and discovering her ability to break the boundaries of a normal human's balancing skills combined with the suspense of learning that not everything is as it seems makes for a story that's addictive and very difficult to put down.

My suggestion - if you haven't already read the book, give it a try.  With the story being so good, I'm excited to see where the show is going to take us.  If it's anywhere near as good as Braswell's writing, it should be a wild ride!

As an interesting side note - if you are looking to borrow or purchase the book now, you may not be able to find it under the name, Liz Braswell.  The earlier printings of the book were put out under the pen-name, Celia Thomson.

UnderCover Friday - TEMPEST RISING by Tracy Deebs

You know a cover is spectacular when one look makes you say, "Oh yeah.  I'm sharing that!"

TEMPEST RISING by Tracy Deebs looks like it has an interesting storyline.  I have no doubt that it could probably keep me interested; however, it's rarely the story that makes us pick up a book as we're walking by.  In fact, the majority of the books I come across are not the books that I initially went looking for.  Typically they have such an eye-catching cover that I can't help but feel the need to possess the beautiful artwork and of course the words inside.

So, what do you think?  I find that I'm drawn to any cover with a tattoo, being such a fan of them myself.  Also, the beautiful way the girl has been painted along with the perfect purple shade of her tail...yep - I'm in love!

If you're curious, All Things Urban Fantasy did an interview with Ms. Deebs.  She revealed that Katarina Sokolova is the artist behind this beautiful cover.  Take a peek at her website if you get a chance.  Her art is just divine!

From Goodreads:

Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her—and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.

UGLIES Review - Scott Westerfield

Uglies (The Uglies)UGLIES by Scott Westerfeld
My Recommended Age Group: Young Adult to Adult
Released: February 8, 2005
Other work in series: Pretties (The Uglies)Specials (The Uglies)Extras (Uglies)
Our Rating:

From Goodreads:

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.

But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

My thoughts:

I sure do love a good dystopia.  UGLIES by Scott Westerfeld was another book in a long list of recommended reads that I was late in getting to.  Now that I've finished it, I can't wait to get into the next book in the series!

Every day people judge each other based on multiple factors, appearance being one of them.  Some discussions center around the fact that a lot of this judging is subconscious - we analyze how good of a mate an individual might be based on their appearance.  In Westerfeld's Uglies series, he takes this one step further by creating a world in which inequality has been stripped from society in the form of making everybody look essentially the same.  Yes, each individual still retains their own characteristics so the planet isn't made up of clones, but just barely.  Faces are made symmetrical, features are shrunken or enlarged based on what the brain considers attractive.  And of course, all the science behind these ideas is done by someone else - a government that remains fairly secretive.

Everyone wants to have the magic surgery to become pretty.  Life is happier and full of parties when you're pretty.  Everyone does it...right?

UGLIES follows Tally through her physical and emotional journey surrounding the idea of becoming pretty.  When her friend Shay runs away the night before her surgery instead of staying and having the much desired operation, Tally is thrown in the middle of a whirlwind of events that may leave her questioning everything she knows.

What I loved about this book was the way Westerfeld takes a strong topic like appearance and inequality and throws it back at the reader.  He has no shame in showing the inherent issues with having everyone look "ideal."  The message that I got from this story is that anyone, but young adults especially, should appreciate their appearance as being unique to them.  There is no "ideal" appearance and even if science somehow devises one, having everyone become ideal may not be the best option out there.

Jam packed with adventure, emotion, and a message that I loved, UGLIES was a hugely entertaining read.  The book wasn't preachy and instead allowed the reader to draw their own conclusions as we follow the characters of the story.  With such a strong beginning, it will be interesting to see where Westerfeld takes us in the next book, Pretties.

CITY OF BONES Review - Cassandra Clare

City of Bones (Mortal Instruments)CITY OF BONES  by Cassandra Clare
My Recommended Age Group: Young Adult to Adult
Released: March 27, 2007
Other work: City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments)City of Glass (Mortal Instruments)City of Fallen Angels (Mortal Instruments, Book 4)Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, Book 1)
Our Rating:

From Goodreads:

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder - much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing - not even a smear of blood - to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know....

My thoughts:

Anytime one finishes a great series, there is always that moment of trepidation.  Will the next book I choose be as good as this last one?  What if it isn't?

I had been through quite a ride with The Hunger Games trilogy and wasn't sure how to go about finding another series with that same level of danger, adventure, and emotion that I'd found there.  I pondered my bookshelves for a while and finally decided on CITY OF BONES by Cassandra Clare.  It'd been sitting there for a while, patiently waiting for me to find the right time to delve in.  Although I started this new series, The Mortal Instruments, with trepidation, two pages in, all of that was thrown out the window.

As mentioned, this book has been sitting on the shelf for a while.  Now, I have no idea why.

Clary seems like an average teenage girl, out with her average (if nerdy) teenage guy friend.  The story begins at the Pandemonium club where the two friends are destined to have a great night of fun and dancing.  Well, the story wouldn't be all that spectacular if that's all that happened, would it?

Within moments we have demons and beautiful tattooed strangers thrown at us, hinting at a world beyond what Clary could have ever imagined.  A dark plot seems to be at play and somehow Clary has been thrown right into the middle of it.

There are many great young adult stories out there right now.  For me, this is one of the best.  Not only is Clary a fantastic little heroine to follow, full of spunk, spirit, and best of all, secrets, but the characters surrounding her each come to life with personalities of their own as well.  To make matters even more interesting, while attempting to save themselves and possibly the world from a force long since dead, the group of teenagers find themselves caught up in various love triangles, the likes of which kept me guessing throughout the entire book.

CITY OF BONES is full of action, packed with emotion, and centered around a story that can't help but keep the reader engaged.  Although it appears to be a larger book, this was a fairly quick read.  Something about not being able to set it down for extended periods of time probably had something to do with it.

I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good, action packed book filled with supernatural elements.  The basis for Ms. Clare's world is unique and easy to follow as are her characters.  Overall, this was a great read and left great promise for the second book in the series.

An Interesting Find and BLOGFEST 2011

Two things:

#1 - Has anyone else heard of the new series starting on ABC Family - The Nine Lives of Chloe King?  It's based on the book series of the same name by Liz Braswell and will be airing staring June 14th.  I got hooked on ABC Family starting with Pretty Little Liars and now with the new season about to start up, I've been visiting ABC's website to see what PLL tidbits I can pick up.  I was elated to see this series.

Anyone that knows me or has visited this blog knows that I have a thing for girls (or boys) and cats.  I think I may actually be giddy with excitement!

#2 - Who's interested in another BLOGFEST?  I'm not going to start signups just yet as I want to gauge participation first.  If you're interested leave me a comment.  If we get a decent number of interested blogs we'll go ahead and get one going.  Last year's was a tremendous success with participating blogs gaining many new, loyal followers (almost sounds like a cult).

Spread the word.  That's the way BLOGFEST works and the best way to see what kind of interest is out there.

My thoughts:

Conclusions - good or bad?  Typically, I hate conclusions.  For me, the conclusion to a series either comes in two forms.  The first is an odd combination of story elements designed to answer most of the reader's remaining questions about the series.  The second type of conclusion that I usually come across is good in and of itself but leaves me feeling depressed because the series is actually over.

MOCKINGJAY was an unfortunate combination of both.

I suppose that in many ways that's a good thing.  The series was great and I really didn't want to leave it. I want to continue to follow the characters and see what happens in the world.  At the same time, the weirdness level of MOCKINGJAY went a bit beyond the first two books and although it was a fabulous storyline, it did leave me feeling a bit out of whack (kind of like Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn).

The overall message here is probably that MOCKINGJAY was a great conclusion, answered many (but not all) of our questions and left the brain with something to ponder over.  It added substance to the series, which isn't always the easiest thing to do three books in, much less at the conclusion of a story.

One of my favorite aspects of MOCKINGJAY, and the series as a whole, was the realistic progression of emotions portrayed by the characters.  I'm sure we've all come across a book or series where we say, "Hmmm, okay.  Not totally believable but I'll buy it because I like the story."  Collins could have easily made this trilogy only ho-hum by not truly investing in her character's emotions.  Instead, the time and effort she put into that aspect of the stories really shows.  With the trials and tribulations the characters have to face, one automatically assumes that certain emotions and changes in personality will take place. Collins does not disappoint and gives us a fairly realistic picture of what the characters are undergoing mentally.  To me, that's what takes this series above and beyond most that I have read.

If you're looking for a book, or series, with fabulous action, emotional sequences, great dialogue and characters to fall in love with, The Hunger Games is definitely worth a try.  Blood pounding and gut wrenching, these books leave you breathless and yet desperately searching for more (as my trek across state lines looking for the next book in the series proves).
