Guest Post with Jeannie Lin - BUTTERFLY SWORDS

I was recently lucky enough to get an opportunity to host Jeannie Lin as she discussed her book BUTTERFLY SWORDS.  Apparently it must be my lucky month because she's back with a little bit of information about the scenery and majesty of China.

Let's all give her a warm welcome!

Jeannie Lin
Mysterious China
One of the beauties of setting a story in China is that with over two thousand years of history and a land mass that encompasses forests, deserts, and seaports, I can always find a suitably intriguing location. One of the best parts of researching is location scouting.
For instance, I needed a place along the western frontier of China. I wanted something that was a little lawless and wild. My searches brought me across pictures of a big hunk of rock which was all that was left of the Yuman Guan (Jade Gate) fortress.

It didn’t seem like much, but I was stricken by how lonely it looked, out on the edge of nowhere. It was more than a thousand years old and all that was left of it were stories and poems.
For the sequel to Butterfly Swords, I needed a place for a stronghold in the South. Someplace moody and hidden, yet romantic. The Bamboo Sea of Sichuan seemed the perfect place for a Beauty and the Beast story to unfold.

The Bamboo Sea is often used in film and was featured in the bamboo forest fight scene in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
For another project, I wanted someplace that had the reputation for being mysterious. Similar to legends of the Black Forest in Bavaria, I thought, but in China. I was prepared to make one up, but after a few internet searches I found Heizhu Valley – often called the Bermuda Triangle of China or the Death Valley.
I dream of visiting these places one day to research and take a million pictures. In the meantime, I try to visualize and weave descriptions around them, which I must admit, isn’t hard at all, given the legends and history of China and the seemingly infinite number of fascinating locations.

Jeannie Lin writes historical romantic adventures set in Tang Dynasty China. Her short story, The Taming of Mei Lin from Harlequin Historical Undone is available September 1. Her Golden Heart award-winning novel, Butterfly Swords, was released October 1 from Harlequin Historical and received 4-stars from Romantic Times Reviews—“The action never stops, the love story is strong and the historical backdrop is fascinating.”
Join the launch celebration at http://www.butterfly-swords.com for giveaways and special features. Visit Jeannie online at: http://www.jeannielin.com

It's beautiful, isn't it!

Thanks so much for stopping by today Jeannie!

Author Interview with Stephanie Draven - POISONED KISSES

Today I am thrilled to welcome the wonderful Stephanie Draven to A Journey of Books to promote the upcoming release of POISONED KISSES. Want a little romance? Looking for a little fantasy to spice up your reading? POISONED KISSES is the book you're looking for. It got my blood pounding from the first page and kept me reading all the way through.

When I encounter a really good book, I'm usually a little curious about the author that wrote it. A huge thanks to Ms. Draven for answering some questions that I posed her. Discussing her writing and her writing style, Ms. Draven gives us a little bit of insight into her world.

From Goodreads:

Daughter of the war god Ares, Kyra had been born into darkness—a darkness she'd vowed to annihilate. Just as she'd destroy the notorious Greek arms dealer Marco Kaisiris for feeding the bloodlust she despised. She'd use her nymph's carnal powers to seduce him, then slay him. But Kyra wasn't prepared for Marco's secret weapon.

For millennia Kyra had avoided mortal men, but she couldn't resist Marco's magnetism, his raw sexuality. Time and again his sculpted body took her to heights to which only the gods soared. That he was a shape-shifting hydra she could forgive, but not his one fatal flaw—his poisoned blood could kill her. Kyra had fallen for the only being who could destroy her…. Yet how could she spend eternity without him?

What was your inspiration for writing POISONED KISSES?

I’d have to say that it was Homer’s Odyssey. Before you guffaw, let me explain! Here we have a quintessentially male story about one dude’s journey to return from a war he never wanted to fight in the first place. There’s lots of good reasons to root for Odysseus, including his abiding love for his wife Penelope. But along his series of adventures, he meets the nymph Calypso, who saves his life and takes him in. He becomes her lover, and in some versions of the story, has children with her. But in the end, she has to let him go.

I always found that to be profoundly sad, and wondered what the Greeks were trying to tell us. Was it a warning that women who get involved in adulterous affairs would suffer? I don’t think so. It has more to do with the fact that for the Greeks, nymphs represented everything they feared about the natural woman. She was powerful, she was independent, she was lustful and alluring. If not closeted away with her weaving like good little Penelope at the loom, women would naturally devolve into...bad girls.

So when I decided to write Poisoned Kisses, I wanted to write a story about a very bad girl who, nonetheless, deserves love. Enter Kyra, my dark nymph of the underworld, whose tough exterior hides a deep vulnerability, and a soft heart.

Do you come across any snags or any roadblocks when writing it?

My biggest roadblock is that I chose a hero who is an arms dealer and I know nothing about weapons. I’m fortunate enough to have some close friends and relatives who are gun experts, otherwise I would’ve been completely lost.

What is your favorite aspect of POISONED KISSES?

I got to play with issues of identity. Both Marco and Kyra can take on the appearance of other people. They use their powers to fool one another several times. But when they both know what it's like to be known for themselves--truly known--they must let down all their defenses and disguises and figure out who they really are.

How are fans responding to your book?

The book doesn’t officially release until October 1st, but so far, so good!

What is it that you love about mythology?

Mythology are stories that we all share. Mythology is a cultural unifier that not only gives us a common understanding of our roots, but also tells us a great deal about our deepest fears and highest aspirations. I like to ask myself, ‘What chord did this story strike with the ancients that made people repeat it again and again, even before such stories were written down.’

Do you have a favorite myth? Something that seems to stick with you? Mine is a fairly obvious one - the story of Medusa; it's just such a sad story.

I’ve always had a special fondness for the story of Psyche and Cupid because it’s an ancient romance. It has all the elements! It’s also one of the few ancient myths that follows the journey of the heroine, not the hero.

As an aside, I should mention that like you, I also have a soft spot for Medusa, which is why I wrote the novella that appears at the back of Poisoned Kisses. It’s entitled Midnight Medusa, and re-imagines the gorgon myth. It’s actually the story that kicked off the Mythica series in the first place!

What is your writing routine like? Do you do anything special to warm up, cool down or keep the story going?

I understand my fundamental strengths and weaknesses. I’m not a good writer; but I fancy myself as a good re-writer. Because of that, I try to get a first draft as fast as I can, knowing that I’ll go back and fix it later.

With your busy schedule, you must have some wonderful time management tricks. Care to share?

Oh, this is a terrible time to ask me that because all my time management tricks are failing me! I used to be the most organized person in any room. I had my Christmas shopping done months ahead, with plenty of time to sent out cards and bake special treats. My house was sparkly. Menus were planned, work was always complete before the deadline...but at the moment, its all chaos!

Our readers always like to know, what kind of books do you read or what authors do you like to read?

I love books that challenge me to think differently about something. I love controversial romances. I love edgy erotica and speculative fiction. I also love historical fiction. This probably accounts for my strange and eclectic list of favorite authors, including George R. R. Martin in fantasy, Margaret George in historical fiction, Laura Kinsale in romance, Megan Hart in erotica, and so on. (I want to name so many more, but the list would get very unwieldy.)

Are you working on any other projects currently?

I just finished up a third novella for the Mythica series entitled Siren Song. It should be out this winter. Later next year my novel about a mind-controlling minotaur in love will be coming out with Harlequin Nocturne. I still don’t have a title for that one yet. I’m told Seduction of the Minotaur is already taken.

Anything else you'd like to share with our readers?

I’d just like to thank everyone for reading, and to let them know that I’m hosting a virtual launch celebration for Poisoned Kisses in which I’m giving away books and other free goodies. I’d love for folks to participate!

Stephanie Draven is currently a denizen of Baltimore, that city of ravens and purple night skies. She lives there with her favorite nocturnal creatures–three scheming cats and a deliciously wicked husband. And when she is not busy with dark domestic rituals, she writes her books.

Stephanie has always been a storyteller. In elementary school, she channeled Scheherazade, weaving a series of stories to charm children into sitting with her each day at the lunch table. When she was a little older, Stephanie scared all the girls at her sleepovers with ghost stories.

She should have known she was born to hold an audience in her thrall, but Stephanie resisted her writerly urges and graduated from college with a B.A. in Government. Then she went to Law School, where she learned how to convincingly tell the tallest tales of all!

A longtime lover of ancient lore, Stephanie enjoys re-imagining myths for the modern age. She doesn’t believe that true love is ever simple or without struggle so her work tends to explore the sacred within the profane, the light under the loss and the virtue hidden in vice. She counts it amongst her greatest pleasures when, from her books, her readers learn something new about the world or about themselves. Stephanie also writes historical fiction as Stephanie Dray and has a series of forthcoming novels from Berkley Books featuring Cleopatra’s daughter.

Wind Warrior ~ The Iroquois Series ~ Book One

Leslie Michaels is a visionary, and only those close to her know of her special gift and the visions that come when her mind and body surrender to sleep.  Fate has a way of righting many wrongs, and for Leslie it is a destiny that changes her life dramatically. But not before she is forced to flee into the wilderness to escape a murderous trapper bent on claiming her for his very own.  Faith and a strong will to survive are her only companions, until she encounters Winnokin, the handsome Seneca war chief who first came to her in her dreams.  Not only does he prove to be her rescuer and protector, he teaches her that tragedy can breed happiness and the passion to live and love deeply once again.

Wind Warrior plunges readers into the intimate depths of a relationship that unfolds like a live drama before their eyes while painting an insightful and intriguing portrait of Native Indian life in the 1800s.  It is a story of longing, of a wanton need to survive all odds, and a love so strong it conquers human evil. Wind Warrior expresses with cunning words the simple, raw human emotions that hold readers spellbound and captivates their hearts.

Author Interview with Jeannie Lin - BUTTERFLY SWORDS

Today I am thrilled to introduce Jeannie Lin, whose book, BUTTERFLY SWORDS was the winner of the 2009 Golden Heart Award. Ms. Lin is a beautiful author with some beautiful books out, guaranteed to provide a little romance and escapism to anyone looking for it.

Let's give a warm welcome to Ms. Lin as she introduces us to her writing and BUTTERFLY SWORDS.

What was your inspiration for writing BUTTERFLY SWORDS?

Jeannie: I had finally finished my first novel after two years of writing and rewriting, stopping and starting. I had read Stephen King’s On Writing and found it illuminating. King said that he would finish a book one day, and then take out another sheet of paper and start the next book the day after. So I set aside my first book and opened up another document the very next day.

The only character I had on hand was the sidekick best friend from the first book, a womanizing, hard-drinking, but lovable swordsman named Ryam. He was characterized as a genius with the blade, but a disaster in everything else. My “Inigo Montoya”. He was the spark that started it all.

Do you come across any snags or any roadblocks when writing it?

Jeannie: Writing it, no. I was trying out a program guided by Candace Havens called Fast Drafting. I loosely outlined the story, wrote out the opening chapters and then fast drafted the rest -- meaning I wrote forward at the rate of about 10-20 pages a day. After taking two years to finish the first book, I finished this one in two months.

Now revising...that’s another story. I worked my butt off to revise it. But the story structure is pretty much intact from that first draft.

What role did wuxia play in writing the story?

Jeannie: Ah, you’ve done your research! That’s a genre that’s near and dear to my heart. Wuxia stories are set in a certain historical world. It’s hard to describe it other than a historical fantasy world where swordsmen and warriors roam and live by a code of honor. Wuxia stories very similar to chivalric tales in western literature.

As I brainstormed this story, I realized it had to be a swordfight novel. The sword was the one thing that Ryam was good at. The perfect girl had to be a warrior girl -- the language they would both understand was martial arts. From there, the story became more than a romance with a couple of fights thrown in. Swordfighting and the code of the xia (warrior hero) would guide the whole story.

What fascinates you about the Tang Dynasty?

Jeannie: What doesn’t fascinate me about the Tang Dynasty? LOL. If I had to pick one thing, it would be the fiercely independent women of the era. This was the Golden Age of China, while it was the Dark Age of western Europe. Women rose to the highest ranks of the empire. They were warriors and politicians and scholars. A woman even became Emperor, not Empress, but Emperor.

What is your favorite aspect of writing?

Jeannie: I suck at first drafts. I hate them. I fear them.

My favorite aspect of writing is when I’m revising and cleaning everything up and then a moment happens when I feel that I’m finally getting the story under my grasp. For romance, it’s the moment the characters actually fall in love--not the moment where I wrote that they should--the moment when I’ve layered in enough nuance and execution that I believe it. When I believe it can be done.

How are fans responding to your stories?

Jeannie: Positive. Too positive. (Is there such a thing?) It’s still early in the game. I’ve only heard from a couple of advance reviewers and people who’ve perused the excerpts. I’m sure the negative reviews are lying in wait and will come soon enough, but I’m actually looking forward to them.

Oh, I immediately thought of the writing when you asked that question! How are they responding to the stories -- people, all sorts of people and for all sorts of different reasons, have really latched on to my stories. The reactions have been so emotional. I’m overwhelmed.

What is your writing routine like? Do you do anything special to warm up, cool down or keep the story going?

Jeannie: No, I just write. Most preferably in the morning or late at night. I have little tricks like playing songs on repeat to shut down the rest of my brain; the part that’s not writing. I’m also a little weird in terms of having writing company. I work better in online chatrooms, but not when I’m chatting. I just like to have people “around”. I think it comes from growing up in a crowded household. I don’t know how to study without a lot of background chatter.

How do you manage your writing with other aspects of your life?

Jeannie: Early, early morning. Late, late at night. I also have a telecommuting job, so I can do things like answer e-mails, blogging, and other administrative tasks when I snatch some time during the day. Sometimes I do feel like I neglect my poor husband when I’ve spent a whole weekend writing so no matter how behind on my goal I am, I will stop and spend time with him.

Our readers always like to know, what kind of books do you read or what authors do you like to read?

Jeannie: I’m a capricious reader. I hop around quite a bit. Though I have my favored authors, I don’t reliably pick up every new book by them the week it comes out. I’m mesmerized by Lisa See. Stephen King and Kurt Vonnegut Jr. are always go-to authors, but I’m so behind on their backlists you wouldn’t believe it.

The last books I absolutely inhaled would have to be The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and Not Quite A Husband by Sherry Thomas.

Are you working on any other projects currently?

Jeannie: I’m trying to work on my first series. It’s a historical paranormal that features Taoist sorcery and Chinese spirit and demon mythology. Very, very wuxia. I’m also trying to brainstorm another historical romance short story. My dream project is a women’s fiction that I’m working on with my sister that’s loosely based around our grandmother’s life story. I think neither of us have the guts right now to dig into it.

Jeannie, thanks for stopping by! Just like your writing, this was a fun and colorful interview!

Readers, if you haven't already, I suggest taking a look at some of Ms. Lin's writing and perhaps visiting the blog tour for BUTTERFLY SWORDS. Be on the lookout for our review soon!

(As a side note, I had to come back and say that I am in LOVE with her covers.  Absolutely beautiful.)
