Guest Post with Terry Spear - SEDUCED BY THE WOLF

Today it is my pleasure to welcome Terry Spear, author of SEDUCED BY THE WOLF.  I asked Ms. Spear about her research and she was kind enough to oblige.  Enjoy!

Terry Spear Guest Blog; Author of Seduced By the Wolf

Interesting Facts in Werewolf Research

First, thanks so much for having me here today on A Journey of Books! I’m thrilled to be here! Without further ado, here’s what I’ve found in my research for writing the “Heart of the Wolf” wolf saga!

Did you know that wolves’ whiskers are extremely sensitive? Or that when wolves maneuver on ice, they spread out their paw pads to keep from slipping? Or that they have fur between their pads that can keep their paws warm? Dogs do also, but not enough to keep them warm as the Arctic wolves do in the Arctic. In fact, sled dog owners often employ booties for their dogs. Wolves wouldn’t be caught dead in dog booties.

Did you know that wolves mate for life but probably because of all the inbreeding, and specialized breeding, and pampered pooch scenario, any dog will do for dogs?

Did you know that wolfbane can kill a werewolf? Keep him from transforming into a werewolf? Cure him of his werewolfism? Such are the various notions of the legends of werewolves as pertaining to wolfbane—it all depends on the storyteller! What is the truth?

The truth can kill. Or at least wolfbane can. When I was researching wolfbane for Wolf Fever (December 2010), I was astonished to find every legend negated every other legend. So I had to reveal the truth. Werewolves, and the human populace, deserve the truth, after all.

In each story while doing research, I’ve uncovered all kinds of fun trivia. In Dreaming of the Wolf (Fall 2011), there are no drive-in movie theaters for Jake Silver to take Alicia Greiston to in the real town where their story begins in Colorado. I was so disappointed that I’m going to have to create one closer to home.

In Heart of the Wolf (A Publishers Weekly 2008 Book of the Year!), the werewolf world was created, based on real wolves! There isn’t a wall that goes down between their werewolf half and their human half when they are in their other form. They are one with both halves and retain their human personality as a wolf, and their wolf senses as a human. They’re not strictly humans or wolves, but werewolves who have a different take on situations based on their secretive nature.

When a wolf will hunt for food without any other thought in mind but to assuage his hunger, a werewolf will consider if his kill might arouse suspicion that a wolf is in the area, whether he’s starving or not. As a human, he might wish to turn into the wolf to take care of a villain if the hero, for instance, is unarmed and the villain is armed, yet as a werewolf, he still must think of the consequences to his kind.

But when he’s in his wolf form, I try to keep him true to the natural instincts of a wolf. They shake off excess water, just like a dog does, when soaked to the skin. But as a werewolf, in Seduced by the Wolf (in stores this month), Leidolf must force himself not to go through the ritual in the face of danger.

Silver kills werewolves, you’ll learn in Legend of the White Wolf, but did you know that silver kills anyone? But that despite that, some folks actually use it for its “medicinal” purposes???

While witch trials were ongoing, werewolf trials were, too. Yep. Real werewolf trials! You’ll hear a little about them in Legend of the White Wolf also.

Did you know that you can own wolves in Colorado? Only not in some cities, and there are restrictions on owning them. I’ve included some details in Dreaming of the Wolf.

There are no wolves, save some zoo wolves, in Scotland either. Except for the werewolf kind in Heart of the Highland Wolf (coming Jun 2011).

And what inspired me to write Seduced by the Wolf, was a real story of a gray she-wolf who’d lost her mate to a hunter, when she’d just had a litter of pups. A wolf biologist discovered her, and took her and her litter to safety.

I’ll never know what I’ll find in my research and how it’ll impact on my story. Sometimes, like in Seduced by the Wolf, when I thought it would be warm enough to swim in a lake in spring in Oregon, I discovered that the lake was glacier-fed and sooo, would not be very warm. But it makes it fun for me to change direction and to write it from a different angle then. Leidolf’s tough. He can handle it. Cassie’s like—no way, and will only get into the water in her wolf form—fur coat protecting her from the cold. 

So what have I found in my research that’s interesting? Lots of stuff, and I love sharing it with my readers!

Thanks so much for having me here!

My question for readers is: Have you been to a drive-in theater? Would you be willing to go with a werewolf hunk like Jake Silver, brother to Darien, pack leader in Destiny of the Wolf?

Terry

From Goodreads:
AN INNOCENT WOMAN
Emmaline Marlow is about to wed the ancient patriarch of the Hepburn clan to save her father from debtor's prison when the Hepburn's sworn enemy Jamie Sinclair bursts into the abbey on a magnificent black horse and whisks her away. Jamie is everything her bridegroom is not--young, handsome, virile...and a perilous temptation for her yearning heart.

A DANGEROUS MAN
Jamie expects Emma to be some milksop English miss, not a spirited beauty who will defy him at every turn. All of his plans to use her as a pawn in the centuries old Highland feud begin to go awry when irresistible passion flares between the two of them. A man can kidnap a bride, but is it possible for him to steal her innocence without losing his own heart?

My thoughts:

There's nothing like an exciting romance to totally make your day. THE DEVIL WEARS PLAID by Teresa Medeiros is one such book. Full of adventure, passion, and intrigue, this book is the perfect read to keep you entertained for hours.

Emma is about to be married when she is suddenly whisked away by the young and handsome Jamie. She knows she shouldn't be attracted to him, but how is she supposed to resist when he is everything that her heart and hormones are calling for?

(It's not easy for the reader to resist either!)

What Emma doesn't know is that Jamie has stolen her for the purpose of using her. She is nothing but a pawn to him...or is she? As we would expect from two young and attractive people thrown together in a whirlwind of adventure and suspense, a romance begins to bloom between the two. Can Jamie go through with his plans when his heart may now be in Emma's hands?

The best part about this book was the romantic tension. We want things to work out well for Emma. We begin to like Jamie; however, how can we hope for the best for both of them when that means one or the other will be hurt? Emma is beautiful and completely relatable to a female reader. Jamie is...well, he is a completely hotty and essentially eye candy. He has that bad boy learning to love personality that just makes a girl swoon.

If the relationships within THE DEVIL WEARS PLAID weren't enough to hook a reader, the descriptions and scenery should be. Ms. Medeiros has a wonderful way of describing the world, including the clothing and the beautiful settings. The landscape is brought to life in vivid detail which really helps to draw the reader into the story.

I found this book compelling and quite pleasant to read. Ms. Medeiros has a lovely writing style that brings the story to life without drowning us in a barrage of words. The romance is great, full of tension and totally lived up to my expectations. I recommend this to fans of romance and especially fans of highland romance.

A Q&A With Two Very Smart Chicks
Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr, two authors participating in the
Smart Chicks Kick It Tour, give a behind-the-scenes look at the unique concept behind the tour, how and why it was developed and what fans have to look forward to when the Smart Chicks hit the road on September 13, 2010.
What makes the Smart Chicks Kick It Tour different than other tours that feature multiple authors at one venue?

Melissa: This tour is definitely one-of-a-kind! We are author-organized AND author-funded with an ambitious schedule -- 12 cities in 14 days.  Another unique component is that the 18 participating authors come from a wide variety of different publishers.  Additionally, the author line-up at each city is different, and the authors on the tour are a combination of bestsellers, award-winners, and up-and-comers.  They are all authors that Kelley and I personally chose (although there are a lot more authors we wanted to include but we are already twice the size we planned!).

Kelley: Most importantly, these are all authors who write “kick ass” protagonists—and in our opinion, a lot of the authors we invited are pretty kick ass too. A couple of them have reached out to set up visits to juvenile detention facilities in tour cities; they are reaching out to readers; and they are rolling up their sleeves to make this potentially unwieldy tour of ours run smoothly.

How did you come up with the name for the tour?

Melissa: During the preliminary planning in August 2009, I sent an email to Kelley & Alyson Noel that (among other things) said, “We need a name.”  Kelley pulled our ideas together and suggested “Smart Chicks Kick It” because, as she succinctly summarized, we were focusing on books about “Strong heroines, smart heroines, capable heroines...real girls with real strengths, not necessarily out there kicking butt, but able to handle themselves in tough situations.”

Putting together a twelve city tour with 19 different authors must be quite challenging.  How have you managed it all?

Melissa:  I like organizing things—to the point that as a result of the fun of setting up the tour, I recently volunteered to run the Young Adult track for RT Booklovers Convention in 2011. To me, this is good fun.
It looked complicated (and has been), but I enjoy it. Fortunately, Kelley is also very organized, and we have many great volunteers.

Kelley:  Yes, this has really been a grass-roots effort and it’s been great how several Smart Chicks have lent their expertise to the planning and execution of this tour.  For example, participating authors Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a PhD student at Yale, so she’s our “gridmaster,” creating numerous spreadsheets to help keep track of everyone. Rachel Caine is a graphics professional, so she designed one of our tee-shirts and web icons (Melissa’s husband was even roped into doing some graphic work too).  Sarah Rees Brennan is a frightfully clever young woman, so she’s written some great blogs that are both fun and smart.  We have a lot of volunteers, and to be sure we didn’t miss any essentials, we collectively pooled our funds and hired Media Masters Publicity, a literary public relations firm, to help us.

What can fans expect when they attend a Smart Chicks Kick It event?

Melissa: At each event, fans will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the authors and get their books signed by all of the Smart Chicks.  We love to get our pictures taken with our fans – but since we might be sharing a few “spoilers” we don’t allow video.  We don’t want our spoilering caught on tape!

Kelley:  We’re looking forward to having fun and interacting with our fans. There will also be tons of give-aways, including one “mega swag basket” at each stop that features books from ALL 18 Smart Chicks, tote bags, audio books, bracelets and necklaces and lots of other cool stuff!

What has been the response from fans and booksellers?

Melissa: Amazing! We wanted this to be not just “our way” but “their way,” so our first step was a Facebook page where we solicited city and store suggestions from our fans.  Once we came up with our wish list the booksellers eagerly jumped on board. From there, we also spoke to a couple of librarians because we want to include both stores and libraries in our plans. Honestly, the response has been so positive that we went from our initial plan of 6 cities to twice that. We’ve had to draw a line somewhere, but the support has been so strong that we are already getting requests for a Smart Chicks 2.0.

Readers, of course, were a very vocal part of the initial conversations, and their support and enthusiasm for this tour has been there every step of the way.

All of the authors on tour write books categorized as “young adult novels” but many of your fans are adults.  Are you surprised by this?

Melissa: For the decade or so before I wrote, I taught university, but I still read picture books. Story transcends form and age, and as my inbox and solo touring experiences make clear, a lot of adults read so-called “young adult” books.  I think JK Rowling went a long way to reminding readers that books featuring younger protagonists were accessible to adults too.  Moreover, a lot of paranormal texts derive from myth, folklore, and fairy tales. Today, those are wrongly thought of as “children’s” texts, but in the original versions, they were farfrom child-focused. It’s no wonder then that these texts are resonating for adults.

Kelley: I’ve been writing “adult” urban fantasy for years, and those readers also cross all age boundaries from teen to retirement age. I’m not surprised to see the same thing with my YA novels.  If a reader is willing to spend a few hours enjoying the story of a werewolf, he/she isn’t going to have much trouble reading about characters in another age group!

You two will be with 16 other woman for almost two weeks – do you think you will all have a special bond with each other after this experience?

Melissa: I’ll confess that I already knew a number of these women.  I’ve read all of their books, blogs, and in many cases have shared panels with them at conferences, so I’m optimistic that the tour will add to my already positive regard for them. Likewise, others on the tour know each other already. I think the writing community already provides a close connection for a lot of us, and I’m counting on that to give us the strength to succeed at the tour . . . and collaborate to find ample morning coffee.

Kelley:  I’m a little more isolated from the community than Melissa, both because I come from the adult side and because living in Canada has limited my chances to meet fellow writers in person.  But while I only know some of our “Chicks” personally, I’m familiar with all their work and looking forward to meeting the rest.

Can I still “follow” your tour if I’m not located near a city where you will be?

Melissa: Absolutely.  We’ll be tweeting, Facbooking and blogging while on the road, sharing the good (the events), the bad (the grueling travel) and the ugly (a bunch of night owls trying to locate coffee before an early morning interview!).

Kelley:  We’ll also be bringing a photographer along for the ride so we can visually chronicle this adventure and share our trip with our fans.

Are there plans for a Smart Chicks tour in 2011?

Melissa: Tentatively, Kelley and I are looking at a smaller 2.0 tour with a different line-up, bringing in a lot of non-paranormal YA writers and some of the paranormal YA writers who couldn’t make this tour.  In my rather optimistic way, I’d love to do a few big “reunion” events with this line-up too.  I haven’t exactly mentioned that to the authors on tour yet, though, so we’ll see where we end up on that topic.

From Goodreads:
HARRY DRESDEN — WIZARD

Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates. No Love Potions, Endless Purses, or Other Entertainment.

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he's the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things—and most don't play well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a—well, whatever.

There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.

My thoughts:

Harry Dresden.

If you have yet to read any of The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, the name may seem like just a name. Once you've read the books however...that name turns into liquid gold.

I was turned on to Jim Butcher as part of my new move toward listening to books in the car instead of mind numbing commercials on the radio. I'd never read this author before so I didn't know what to expect. I did, however, respect the advice of my bookish friend, so I gave it a try.

My first opinion of this audiobook was that I was never going to be able to get through the story. The reader, James Marsters, spoke too fast and didn't articulate quite well enough for me to understand easily. He mumbled under his breath at times and sounded more like a person sitting in the seat next to me than a person carefully reading every word off the page for me to understand.

I pushed through and decided that I would give the book a half hour. If I couldn't get into it by then, I'd just run out and buy the actual paperback.

About 30 seconds later I was so engrossed in the book that I probably could have driven across the country and not realized it.

There are two fantastic elements that make STORM FRONT by Jim Butcher a great read. Since I have already rambled on about the reader, Marsters, we'll start there.

If you have to or want to listen to an audiobook, listen to James Marsters. This man is a complete genius (as is Renee Raudman of the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews). When you listen to the books that he reads, you're not just listening to someone telling you a story. Masters' voice combined with the writing style of Jim Butcher make for a complete experience. Marsters becomes Dresden and no longer are we simply watching Dresden; we're listening to him speak to us and following him along through his various adventures.

Mr. Marsters, I bow to you. You truly are an expert at making an audiobook come to life.

If Marsters isn't enough to hook a reader, the story certainly will be. In Harry Dresden, Butcher has created a character that you just can't help but want to know. He's kind of like that abandoned teddy bear sitting in the corner that you feel compelled to dust off and cuddle. Of course, this teddy bear can capture demons and perform some wildly powerful magic - but that doesn't stop you from wanting to be his friend.

Harry Dresden is a good guy that always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's full of virtue but isn't above noticing the plunging neckline of a woman's dress or feeling the temptation of a large pile of money tossed at him. He fights evil as best he can and saves innocents when at all possible. He has a killer personality with a wry sense of humor that often leaves me giggling.

Not only is the plot of STORM FRONT full of enough twists and turns to keep the reader entertained throughout the entire book, but this writing is the kind that makes you laugh out loud or clutch your stomach when times get stressful. Butcher knows how to bring emotion out in the reader and he does it wonderfully.

If you're looking for a good Urban Fantasy with a strong and hilarious male lead, I highly suggest STORM FRONT by Jim Butcher. I'm really not a fan of reading male characters and yet Dresden has quickly become one of my all time favorite characters. I can't wait to see what Butcher has in store next!
