Guest Post with Sharon Lathan - LOVING MR. DARCY

I recently had the opportunity to read and review Sharon Lathan's LOVING MR. DARCY. This is a tale of what happens after the marriage of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. I knew this was going to be a good book and was thrilled when Lathan agreed to do a guest post. I asked her a few different questions to get the ball rolling, but the one that I was really curious about was what she felt about the 2005 movie adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. I personally adore the movie because it is just stunning. The beauty of the scenery and the chemistry between the actors was quite captivating, at least for me. I rarely expect a movie to be like a book and am fairly decent at separating them in my head, so although the movie was different than the original book, I didn't stress much.

Now, enough about me, let's hear from Sharon! Put yours hands together in a warm welcome as she discusses her latest book and her love of the 2005 movie.

Sharon Lathan, Author of Loving Mr. Darcy
August 31, 2009

When Cinnamon requested that I write my blog on what I loved so much about the 2005 movie adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, I’ll be honest—I cringed. Naturally I am thrilled and extremely thankful to be given the opportunity to talk about my latest novel and the series I write, so allow me to explain the audible groans!

My second book is Loving Mr. Darcy: Journeys Beyond Pemberley (release date Sept. 1) and is the follow-up to Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy: Two Shall Become One (currently in stores). I have never made a secret of the fact that my obsession with all things Austen began on a day in November of 2005 when I watched Joe Wright’s big-screen version of the classic novel. Over the subsequent years as I wrote my happily-ever-after sequel, studied Regency history and the writings of Jane Austen, and then promoted my debut novel, the question of “why the movie” came up quite a bit!

And that is why I grimaced at Cinnamon’s request. Then I had an epiphany! All she asked of me was to talk about why I fell in love with the movie. I realized it was a marvelous opportunity to reflect on the past. To transport myself back to that day nearly four years ago when I sat in that dark theater and experienced something marvelous. I popped in my DVD, having not actually watched the movie in several months now, and let the sensations rush over me again.

What DO I love so much about Pride & Prejudice 2005? Let me tell you!

The opening sequence with the lush, vivid colors of green moor and golden sunlight, the soft piano playing amid the tweet of birds and barnyard animals as the camera pans over the landscape and then Lizzy reading and then the graceful sweep over Longbourn is brilliant. I was captured instantly and knew that the filming, at the very least, would be superb. And it is, all the way through. From a cinematic standpoint, this lover of film is captivated by the sheer genius of Joe Wright as an artist. I love the interpretation of England: raw, gritty, real. Not the pristine perfection of most period dramas that, although I love them, is just not accurate.

Then I encountered the Bennets. Laughing, silly, loving, humorous – a family. In that one opening scene lasting about a minute I felt as if I knew these people. I like them! By their dress, hairstyles, mannerisms, furnishings, etc. I instantly comprehended these characters’ personalities and class. Same with Mr. Darcy and the Bingleys. The dialogue, the props, the costumes, and the music – all of it tells a story within itself of who these characters are.

This is a fun movie! I was completely entertained. I laughed numerous times; as did everyone in the theater each of the dozen times I saw it! The actors who played these roles were excellently cast and performed amazingly. How could you not laugh at Mr. Collins? Cringe at Mrs. Bennet? Cheer at Lizzy’s spunk? Cry at Jane’s heartbreak? You feel every emotion and know what they are thinking even when they don’t speak. Superb acting and superb directing. There are so many subtleties that would take me far too long to enumerate, but each moment is utilized flawlessly to advance the story and capture your heart.

I have purposely saved the best for last. I walked into the theater to watch a romance. Pure and simple. Anything else was a bonus, and I got a whole lot more. But I wanted to fall in love with the hero and heroine, root for them, feel their passion, and trust in their love. Most importantly, it was imperative that I believed they would live happily ever after. I did. I do. Wholeheartedly.

Keira Knightley’s Lizzy Bennet is incredible. She is beautiful, witty, fearless, and smart, yet also vulnerable, gentle hearted, and passionate. Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy is handsome, masculine, intelligent, and noble, yet also shy, honest, tender, and passionate. This is a couple perfectly matched and I knew it, immediately. Not because I was supposed to, but because it was there on the screen. Palpable, intense, and exposed. This is the quintessential love story of two people clashing in their similarities and fears, and then growing and changing as they realize the incredible love they possess for each other. A love that is consuming, zealous, and soul binding. A love that needs the other person, that is complete when together. That is what a love story is supposed to be and that is what this movie gives.

My heart was touched by the cinematography, the music, the costuming, the characters, and so much more. But more than anything my soul was moved by a timeless love story so beautifully portrayed that it refused to dissipate. I was and still am bewitched. Watching it again today I do remember those feelings of four years ago. Partially that is because they live inside of me every day as I continue to tell the saga of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy’s love. Partially it is because the movie is astounding.

I am very thankful that it led me to the broader, richer world of Austen’s novels. But the truth is, I would have written my story precisely as it is if I had never picked up Pride and Prejudice. For me, the movie is a masterpiece love story as it is.

Thank you, Cinnamon. I hope I have answered your query adequately!

LOVING MR. DARCY Review - Sharon Lathan

Fans of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice will fall in love with LOVING MR. DARCY: JOURNEYS BEYOND PEMBERLEY by Sharon Lathan. Lizzy and Darcy’s story continues in this book and give us a nice glimpse of what happens when you mix spunky Lizzy with the more serious Darcy. I found Lathan’s interpretation to be romantic, captivating and largely entertaining. This is a book that I would definitely recommend to any lovers of Romance, Historical or otherwise.

From Lathan's Website:
Darcy and Lizzy venture away from Pemberley to journey through England, finding friends, relatives, fun, love, and an even deeper and more sacred bond along the way.

Having embarked on the greatest adventure of all, marriage and the start of a new life together, now the Darcys take the reader on a journey through a time of prosperity, enjoyment, and security. They experience all the adventures of travel, with friends

My thoughts:

Ever wondered what happened after Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy were married? I always figured that the story just ended there but Lathan has allowed us to delve back in to that world of romance and intrigue to explore the relationships a little further.

LOVING MR. DARCY takes us through the lives of Elizabeth and Darcy as they move to their London home and experiences the joys and less than stellar aspects of the city. A major change going on with Elizabeth creates drama in the story as does meeting new people and catching up with old friends. I will warn readers, this is the second book in a series after Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy and while the book is okay to read on its own, I don’t know that I would call it a stand-alone. Events took place in the first book that largely shape the characters in LOVING MR. DARCY and having not read the first book, I found myself often confused.

With Lathan’s books, there is a lot of talk about whether or not Jane Austen purists will fall in love with Lathan’s characters as much as they did Austen’s. Well, Lathan is not Austen. They are two separate individual writers and as such their characters differ slightly. Elizabeth and Darcy are not the exact same characters as the Elizabeth and Darcy in Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but the story was entertaining nonetheless.

Lathan does a wonderful job of imbuing the story with emotion. As we journey with Mr. and Mrs. Darcy on the road to discovering the depth of their love, Lathan makes every moment count. Whether it’s happiness, sadness or even at times a bit of anger, the emotions are vivid and pop off the page to affect the reader. This really helped to draw me in and hook me. The intensity of the actions sequences didn’t hurt either.

Fair warning time: This is a modern interpretation of Austen’s work and as such contains adult themes and adult scenes. I would give it a sensuality rating of 3.5.

I found LOVING MR. DARCY to be an enjoyable read. If you go into the story with the understanding that you are not going to get a book written by Austen and that the characters may differ slightly, I think the you’ll get a decent amount of enjoyment yourself. The story is great in its own right and would be a fantastic read for any out there who love Romance.

BLOOD PROMISE Review - Richelle Mead

Richelle Mead is the fabulous author of the Vampire Academy series. The series started with Vampire Academy, was followed by Frostbite and continued with Shadow Kiss. Each book became more and more intense as danger enters the lives of Moroi Lissa and her Guardian Rose. I admit that I was nervous about BLOOD PROMISE. It has been long awaited and we all know that far too often when we count down the seconds for a new book it turns out to be a dud. I gradually fell in love with Mead’s books and was praying that BLOOD PROMISE would continue that fantastic story that Mead had laid out. By the end of the first page I could tell that BLOOD PROMISE was most definitely a winner.

Want to read the book blurb? Head on over to Mead's Website. *WARNING: Contains Shadow Kiss spoilers*

My thoughts:

At this point in the review I typically like to give you a quick synopsis of the book from my point of view. This review is going to be more difficult than past reviews for the simple fact that anything I tell you about BLOOD PROMISE will be a spoiler for the first three books. I’ll do my best though.

In short, Rose has a personal quest that she must fulfill and the journey to complete this quest ends up changing her life. Lissa, being the important person that she is, yet again faces hardship and drama. As with the previous three books, the two girls love each other and must find a way to save each other. That’s about all I can tell you without giving away the previous books and especially Shadow Kiss.

What I can tell you about Mead’s latest book is that it surpasses the first three by far. Mead has taken this fantastic world of the Moroi (living vampires), the Dhampir (half vampire), and the Strigoi (dead and cruel vampires) and taken it to a whole new level. The emotions running throughout this book are intense. I cried in a few parts, I laughed in others. Some scenes had my sitting on the edge of the seat in a near panic as I flipped the pages as fast as possible reading to find out what happens next. For me, this was the most surprising aspect of BLOOD PROMISE. While the first three books were good and entertaining, I would say that this book rivals some of the best Paranormals, Romances, and Young Adult books out there.

There were some tricky parts that Mead had to work through in order for BLOOD PROMISE to work. I was curious as to how this would work out, but in the end what she did to make the story work was seamless and worked nicely. Sometimes that’s not always the case as the author ends up having to change some of the best parts of the world that have created in order to get the big twists and turns to work. The fact that Mead could create new and interesting ways to make the story work is a tribute to her talent as an author.

The character development in BLOOD PROMISE was absolutely fantastic. I don’t really expect to learn much new about any main character by the fourth book, but that’s exactly what happened in BLOOD PROMISE. We get a deeper look into many of our favorite characters but especially Lissa and Rose. Along with the introduction of some new characters, Mead manages to take an established series and still give it a new and fresh feel. That in and of itself would have been enough to continue reading BLOOD PROMISE. The stunning story between the covers was certainly icing on the cake.

Fair warning time: There are mentions of adult themes. There are no graphic scenes (in my opinion) and I would give this a sensuality rating of 3 like Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely.

Writing: 10
Interest: 10
Passion: 10
Originality: 10
Characters: 10
Pace: 10
Overall: 60/60 - A

Book Cover: 3/3

What’s not to love? I couldn’t find any huge writing errors, the pace was beautiful, and the characters immediately came to life. It’s obvious the love and care that Mead imbues her writing with. If I hadn’t already been a fan of hers or a fan of the series, this book would hook me immediately.

I recommend this book to any fans of Young Adult fiction, Paranormal fiction, and Romance. This is not a lazy book that relies on cool imagery with a less than stellar plot. This has wonderful imagery, a killer plot and an ending that leaves me gasping and begging that the next book (Spirit Bound due out May 18, 2010) was already in my hands.

Ottinger's Book Review Blog List

Alright, so I've heard about this Book Review Blog List a lot lately. I believe that the database is technically for blogs that deal with any form of Speculative Fiction in any amount but I urge you to check it out yourself just to be sure. Recently A Journey of Books was reviewed by Steve at The Crotchety Old Fan. I want to thank Steve for his review and for pointing out that while A Journey of Books was listed on the Book Review Blog List, I had not yet included the links to those blogs here.

I shall now remedy the situation!

LACED WITH MAGIC Review - Barbara Bretton

LACED WITH MAGIC by Barbara Bretton was a beautifully light tale of magic and romance. I’m not sure what I was expecting when I picked up LACED WITH MAGIC, but this book exceeded that. The story was fantastic, the suspense full and captivating, and to top it all off the romance was completely delicious. If you’re looking for a good Romance with a nice touch of magic, LACED WITH MAGIC is it.

My thoughts:

Readers were first introduced to Chloe, part sorceress and knit shop owner, in Bretton’s first book, Casting Spells. Now, in LACED WITH MAGIC we find Chloe still managing her knit shop and her romantic relationship with the hunky Officer Luke. If only he weren’t a human, life would be so much easier! Finally accustomed to Chloe’s fits of magic, Luke has managed to find a place for himself in the magical town of Sugar Maple. Many accept him, some tolerate him. Regardless of their feelings about Luke, all want him to hurry up and get Chloe pregnant already. Chloe’s ancestors are the key to upholding the spell that protect Sugar Maple and if Chloe leaves the realm without providing a female heir to carry on the protection, Sugar Maple will be lost.

With pressure growing to protect the town, Chloe has a lot on her plate and really doesn’t need any more. Of course, right at that point we meet Karen, Luke’s ex-wife. Spouting stories of hearing her dead daughter’s voice on her cell phone and seeing her in the playground, Karen hunts Luke down and pleads for his help. Anyone that has experienced a new relationship will know that having the focus of the old relationship in close proximity usually leads to some form of drama. Chloe and Karen certainly don’t disappoint. While the three try to figure out the relationships among them, a darker force is gaining power in Sugar Maple. If Chloe can’t gain control of her powers and banish this force forever, Sugar Maple will surely fall.

Bretton wrote a really fantastic story. This isn’t necessarily an epic story or a dark thriller. I wouldn’t place it with Lord of the Rings although the magic and romance do come close at some points. LACED WITH MAGIC is different in that it isn’t very dark. The book has a very light, ethereal quality to it. Perhaps it’s the way Bretton instilled humor in the form of Chloe and her magical mishaps, or Karen and her fairly bratty attitude. Maybe it’s the way she gives all of her characters some sort of realistic quality. Midge the vampire is short and chubby with a perm that might make you cringe. Bretton creates a world where although it is highly magical and supernatural, we could actually visualize driving through on a quiet Sunday morning and being none the wiser.

The characters in LACED WITH MAGIC were just wonderful and really helped to make the book something special. LACED WITH MAGIC is riddled with suspense and tension and could easily have become dark and bogged down. Instead, the characters kept the feel of the book fairly upbeat and added life to the story. These are characters that I would love to know. Normally, a story is a story and although I may get a ton of enjoyment out of it, it’s still just a great story written by a talented author. In this case, I fell in love with Bretton’s characters. It’s obvious that Bretton puts a lot of love into her writing and developing her characters. From just having read LACED WITH MAGIC and experiencing Bretton’s storytelling, I would immediately and without question pick up any of Bretton’s other past or future works.

Finally, I love how Bretton instilled the book with knitting tidbits. Chloe owns the knit shop and is a voracious knitter so Bretton does throw quite a few knitting terms out there. Although I have only dabbled at knitting and crocheting myself, it’s obvious that Bretton knows her stuff. I would warn readers however, I had to look up some of the knitting terms that Bretton uses. If you don’t know what she’s talking about, it’s not really going to affect the story much so I wouldn’t let it detract you from giving the book a try.

Fair warning time: There are a few adult themes and adult scenes. Bretton doesn’t really describe too many body parts so I would give this a sensuality rating of 3.5.

LACED WITH MAGIC has to earn top marks. The story was wonderfully constructed and the characters made the whole thing lift up off the page. I think the best way for me to describe LACED WITH MAGIC would be to say that it is a stroke of sparkly, brilliantly colored paint on a black background. The story stands out and in a world of intense Paranormal Romances it brightens the field with its lighter nature.

Author Interview and Giveaway with Jess C. Scott - EYELEASH

Today I am thrilled to announce that I have author Jess C. Scott here to discuss her new book EYELEASH. This book is new for me in that it is actually considered Blog Fiction.

From Jess:
Jade Ashton is a sassy virgin. In her blog, she vents about “fitting in” a world where superficiality reigns supreme.

Suddenly all logic flies out the window when she meets Novan: a delicious songwriter-musician. They decide to be “friends-with-benefits.” But it’s Novan—with his poems and riddling passages on his own blog—that backs out.

EyeLeash captures self-discovery in the 2000s, and showcases the colorful, intricate drama in two youths’ relentless search for themselves—and what’s really in their hearts.

Sounds good, doesn't it! Now, let's all put our hands together and give Jess a wonderful welcome.

- - - - - - - - - - -

What was your inspiration for writing EYELEASH: A BLOG NOVEL?

A look, and a touch (no kiss)...it's semi-autobiographical, but not totally factual. If it was, I'd probably have called it something more generic and/or straight-laced ("MEMOIRS OF A TEENAGE GIRL", for example!).

Sounds interesting. Did you come across any snags or any roadblocks when writing it?

Oh yes, many. I wanted the blog posts and chats to be as close to reality as possible -- to keep this in mind, while creating/crafting an actual story (that had a plot, and original characters), took a lot of time and effort. I'm happy with the result.

I'll bet readers will appreciate the authentic feel of the story. What is your favorite aspect of EYELEASH?

The blend of fact and fiction. Whatever I couldn't do/didn't happen in real life, I included in the book, and the blend (of fact and fiction) is my personal form of artistic expression.

Nice; you get to explore all those wonderful what-ifs. How are fans responding to your book?

Mostly good, so far. I've had a couple of negative reviews, but hey, you can't please everyone. A writer should write for the story's sake -- not for reviewers...

That's a good way to look at it. Did you have to do any special research when writing EYELEASH? How did this impact the book?

Quite a lot of research (and keen observation) was necessary -- but I think this is necessary to lend authenticity to any book/product. I think it makes the book more relatable. It also means that the book's completion took longer than initially intended.

Can you tell us a little bit about your journey on the road to publication?

It was tedious. A summary is available on one of my blogs @ http://eyeleash.wordpress.com/2009/06/03/blog-novel/

I imagine Blog Fiction might be a new genre to some people. Would you care to tell us a little bit more about it and why you chose to write in this genre?

I consider blog fiction to be the crafting of a story, via the blog format. I always wanted my debut novel to be something unique. I thought readers would increasingly be more open to the concept of a blog novel too (if they weren't already).

What do you like (or dislike) about writing Young Adult fiction?

I like the challenge of navigating the complexities of young adult life, when writing YA fiction. I think young adults should be given stimulating material (with scope and depth) to peruse, which is what I strive to do with most of my work (inclusive of other genres). It's just part of my personal "code of ethics".

What is your writing routine like? Do you do anything special to warm up, cool down or keep the story going?

My problem is over-focusing. I can sit there for hours tweaking something. So I try to remember to move around each day (don't wanna get CTS and so on, in future). I usually focus on one project/book at a time too -- that's how I keep the story going, so I can finish what I start!

With your busy schedule, you must have some wonderful time management tricks. Care to share?

I try to prioritize -- my next project (writing/drawing/whatever) is usually at the top of my list. I try to keep the fun stuff (networking/socializing/shopping) to a minimum, because there's only so much time in a day. I like being productive...hard work comes naturally to me, for better or worse.

Our readers always like to know, what kind of books do you read or what authors do you like to read?

I can be quite a slow reader, because I like to absorb the material in a book. I'm a bit old-school in this department -- some favorites include Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde, Vladimir Nabokov, D. H. Lawrence, Roald Dahl (I *love* THE TWITS!!)...I've been meaning to get a bunch of D. H Lawrence's novels for the longest time (I currently own 3 -- all were absolutely wonderful!).

What are your goals now that EYELEASH is out?

Completing my next novel. I've always wanted to be a successful author -- I think I'll increase my chances, by putting more of my books out there (once they're good to go).

Are you working on any other projects currently?

I'm 1/4 of the way through the first draft of my next book. I've spent a lot of time changing the characters' names. I just launched my second book, so I'll be a little bit busy with regards to that for a while more...but not too long. I've got to get back to the remaining 3 quarters of Book03, stat.

Anything else you'd like to share with our readers?

An Arabic Belly Dance track is on my mp3 playlist right now -- I think Slumdog Millionaire was one of the best movies -- Rurouni Kenshin is one of the best anime -- Brad (http://www.bradsucks.net/) and Kevin (http://incompetech.com) are insanely talented musicians -- I recently read The Bell Jar which was superb -- and I'll be digging around my to-be-read pile later, to see which book to read next.

ICE LAND Review - Betsy Tobin

Definitely not what I was expecting. With ICE LAND by Betsy Tobin I expected a fantastically magical and lighthearted adventure. ICE LAND was certainly full of magic and there were many lighthearted moments, but I think that the story was a little more epic than I had originally expected. That was a wonderful surprise and I quickly found myself engrossed in the story. If you are looking for a great fantasy, something that pushes the bounds of adventure and romance, I would highly suggest taking a look at ICE LAND.

From Penguin:

A beautiful epic of love, longing, redemption, and enchantment in the tradition of Marion Zimmer Bradley’s The Mists of Avalon

Iceland, AD 1000
Freya knows that her people are doomed. Warned by the Fates of an impending disaster, she must embark on a journey to find a magnificent gold necklace, one said to possess the power to alter the course of history. But even as Freya travels deep into the mountains of Iceland, the country is on the brink of war. The new world order of Christianity is threatening the old ways of Iceland’s people, and tangled amidst it all are two star-crossed lovers who destiny draws them together—even as their families are determined to tear them apart

Infused with the rich history and mythology of Iceland, Betsy Tobin’s sweeping novel is an epic adventure of forbidden love, lust, jealousy, faith and magical wonder set under the shadow of a smoldering volcano.

My thoughts:

ICE LAND brings to life the old tales of Norse mythology. With the help of her falcon cloak, Freya can soar above the clouds and become one with the sky. Her domain is love and she often watches those praying to her to solve their problems of the heart. When she gets word that a darkness is about to fall over mankind, Freya travels to uncover a gold necklace that might be the only hope to keep the darkness at bay.

Alternating between the chapters, we continue to learn the story of Fulla and Vili who display a typical Romeo and Juliet story and Dvalin who, as a half-dwarf cannot seem to find his place in the world. The love story between Fulla and Vili is wonderful and full of drama. Vili father’s killed Fulla’s father, and even though he was banished, its’ secret that Fulla’s grandfather wants her to have nothing to do with the youth. Despite the wishes of their families, the pair fall in love and find the answer to themselves in each other.

ICE LAND was beautiful in the way that Tobin developed the romance between Fulla and Vili. This pair could have commanded the story all on their own and I would have been pleased. Adding in Freya and Dvalin was icing on the cake although I believe that most of the story was supposed to revolve around Freya. Tobin has a wonderful way of creating strong female characters and this is part of what appealed to me in ICE LAND. I don’t mind an authentically meek character, but if an author wants to make an independent female in a time when females weren’t typically so independent, I need it to be believable. Tobin did this quite well; she allowed modern women to fall in love with Freya and Fulla while keeping that authentic feel to the story.

Tobin doesn’t just put the Norse gods and goddesses into the ICE LAND; instead, she makes them a part of the story. They play an integral role in the plot of ICE LAND as we learn more about their history, their wants and desires and even their dreams. I found this to be a nice addition to the story as it incorporated a more realistic set of characters (Fulla and Vili) with more fanciful characters (Freya) while still making the story feel believable. Tobin incorporated the elements of magic and reality so well that the story flowed along nicely and made it easy for the reader to suspend his or her disbelief.

Huge kudos to Tobin for great character development and a captivating plot. To top it all off, her writing was easy to read and translated wonderfully from the page to my imagination. One aspect that really helped this was Tobin’s ability to describe the landscape. Her imagery was just gorgeous and there were times when I almost felt sad that I couldn’t experience the lands that she was describing. With Tobin’s writing, the characters came to life and brought with them the gorgeous lands that Tobin creates for us.

ICE LAND has to receive top marks here. While there were times that the alternating chapters made it a little difficult to follow along in the story, if you paid attention and gave in to the urge to flip back a page and reread what had just happened, the story went along nicely. I certainly didn’t let this detract from this story and am glad that I was able to experience the journey with this great set of characters.

If you like Romance, I think you are absolutely going to love ICE LAND. The romantic elements are superb and passionate without really earning a high sensuality rating. I think I would give this a sensuality rating of 3, which it will share with Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. In addition, the action and drama in the book are wonderfully sculpted. If you’re a fan of Fantasy in any form, I think you’ll find something to love in ICE LAND.

Waiting on Wednesday - NEVER CRY WEREWOLF

What could be better than a bratty teenage girl trying to discover who she is meeting the ultimate hunky bad boy? I am beyond excited to read NEVER CRY WEREWOLF by Heather Davis because it looks fascinating, dark, and filled with a good amount of drama and romance. Plus, cute furry creatures. Can't beat that, right?

Release Date: September 1, 2009
Publisher: HarperTeen
ISBN +13: 9780061349232

From Goodreads:
Shelby’s summer plans go totally awry when her horrible stepmother sends her off to “brat camp” as punishment for one too many broken curfews. Camp is full of spoiled rich kids, obnoxious counselors wanting Shelby to talk about her feelings, and a totally inhumane “no cell phones” policy.

Things start looking up, though, when Shelby meets fellow camper (and son of a rock star) Austin Bridges III. But soon she realizes there’s more to Austin than crush material—his family has a dark secret, and he wants Shelby’s help guarding it. Shelby knows that bad boys get her into trouble…but who is she to turn her back on a guy in need, especially such a good-looking one?

Heather Davis’s debut novel mixes together irresistible characters, a pesky full moon, and a delicious taste of the supernatural.

I can't wait!

From Laura Wiess's Website:
All Hanna's wanted since sophomore year is Seth. She's gone out with other guys, even gained a rep for being a flirt, all the while hoping cool, guitar-playing Seth will choose her. Then she gets him – but their relationship is hurtful, stormy and critical, not at all what Hanna thinks a perfect love should be.

Bewildered by Seth's treatment of her and in need of understanding, Hanna decides to fulfill her school's community service requirement by spending time with Helen, her terminally ill neighbor, who she's turned to for comfort and wisdom throughout her life. But illness has changed Helen into someone Hanna hardly knows, and her home is not the refuge it once was.

Feeling more alone than ever, Hanna gets drawn into an audio book the older woman is listening to, a fierce, unsettling love story of passion, sacrifice and devotion. Hanna's fascinated by the idea that such all-encompassing love can truly exist, and without even realizing it, the story begins to change her.

Until the day when the story becomes all too real...and Hanna's world is spun off its axis by its shattering irrevocable conclusion.
