Breaking Dawn - Stephenie Meyer

Book four and the finale to Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga is Breaking Dawn. We've learned a little bit about the Volturi, the leading Vampire coven, in each of the first three books. In Breaking Dawn, things finally come to a head with Jacob, Edward and Bella. Again, I might be a little vague to avoid giving too much away.

As Bella and Edward take a new turn in their relationship, Jacob is left to his own self discovery until his heart is finally snatched away from him. As the three of them struggle to make the best out of the deranged circumstances they are put under, in the background the Volturi are planning a brutal take over. When your body and vengeance can live forever, a takeover can only mean one thing: death. Will Bella lose her true love? Her new family? What will Jacob risk to do what he feels is right?

Breaking Dawn answers all of the questions that the tortured readers, waiting for the next book, asked about. Because of that, the book can at times seem rushed and out of sync with the rest of the series. I'm going to again give my personal opinion and say that I don't feel that the book was rushed at all. I think that in order to wrap up a fantastic saga, Meyer had to fit a lot of information in an infinitesimally small space between two covers. The way that she handles this in the book is absolutely fabulous!

Fair warning - this book is different (but not out of sync) from the rest of the saga. I would have to say that Breaking Dawn pushes the Young Adult boundaries just a smidge. In terms of the movies, of which Twilight is already out and New Moon is due in November of 2009, I would say that Breaking Dawn would be the most difficult to film and the most difficult to market toward a Young Adult audience. Still, I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that they continue on with the movies through Eclipse and on to Breaking Dawn.

I think Breaking Dawn deserves a solid A with extra kudos in Passion, Characters and Pace. I found the pace to be fantastic. It was literally next to impossible to put the book down. "Just one more page." "Okay, just one more chapter." Before you know it the book is done and you're flipping it back over to read it again!

Eclipse - Stephenie Meyer

Book three of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga brings us back to the world of Bella, Edward, Jacob Black and the rest of the Cullens. One of my favorite parts about this book is that we finally get to learn a little more about the history of each of the Cullens. With such varied personalities, I was very interested to see how these beings came to find each other.

An eclipse is when two celestial bodies cross each other's path. One always ends up in front, blocking out the other. Eclipse is the story of Edward and Jacob. Any time there is one girl and two guys, there is bound to be some awesome tension! Who will come ahead? Will Jacob's light block out Edward, or will the dusk of our pale hero blot out Jacob?

As if our little love triangle weren't enough, in Eclipse we get to learn more about the politics between the Cullens and the Quileutes. What will Bella do when the two men she cares about are tearing each other apart vying for her attention while their families stare each other down, waiting for the other to make one wrong move? It's not like she can go anywhere to escape either! She's on strict lockdown in Forks. Some mysterious killer is ripping its way through Seattle and when it looks like the beast is headed toward Forks and more importantly, Bella, her battling lovers must come to terms with each other or risk losing the one thing they would both die for.

This is by far my favorite of the Twilight Saga. I would read books one and two over and over again because they are good, but getting to the third book each time is just icing on the cake. The fantastic action in this book and the character development in this really make Eclipse a must-read.

New Moon - Stephenie Meyer

Emotions. If I had to pick one word to describe NEW MOON, that would be it. I read this in a single night and stayed up until the morning to do so. I couldn't put it down. Literally, I could not make my hands put the book down because I was just so invested in the characters. My heart ached, my chest burned. I needed to know what would happen and get some resolution. Never has a book had that effect on me. Meyer is truly a master of the written word.

Released: August 21, 2006
Others in series: Twilight (book 1), Eclipse (book 3), Breaking Dawn (book 4)

From Meyer's Website:

"Shoot," I muttered when the paper sliced my finger; I pulled it out to examine the damage. A single drop of blood oozed from the tiny cut.

It all happened very quickly then.

Edward threw himself at me, flinging me back across the table...

I tumbled down to the floor by the piano, with my arms thrown out instinctively to catch my fall, into the jagged shards of glass. I felt the searing, stinging pain that ran from my wrist to the crease inside my elbow.

Dazed and disoriented, I looked up from the bright red blood pulsing out of my arm—into the fevered eyes of the six suddenly ravenous vampires.

My thoughts:

NEW MOON is the second of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga. I didn't know what to expect going in to the book as I hadn't heard much about any of the books by the time I read it. To be honest, I started this book less than 36 hours after starting Twilight. Yeah, they really are that good!

I might be a little vague here to avoid giving away spoilers, so please forgive me. If you want to know more information than what I post here, feel free to contact me via comment and I'll email you privately.

NEW MOON is all about change. It's full of emotions; pain, bitterness, sadness, joy...you name it and I'm pretty sure there's an entire chapter dedicated to it in this book. At times I found NEW MOON very difficult to read. Not because of the writing or due to any fault of the author, simply because of the onslaught of emotions the book brings on.

This book details more of the relationship between Bella and Jacob Black, whom we were introduced to in Twilight. We learn a little bit more about Bella, about the strength of character she has and we learn more about the person Jacob is and who he is becoming. We get to see a lot more of the Quileute reservation with its spectacular scenery. In my opinion, that's a real strength of Meyer; that and her ability to develop a relationship in such a way that we feel quite connected to the characters.

Twilight is about the perfect love, but when you're at the top, the only way to go is down. What will happen to Bella and Edward if that sad fate falls on them? NEW MOON answers that for us.

I give NEW MOON a solid A with extra kudos for Passion. This book is FULL of passion! I had to rush through to read it because I couldn't stand not knowing what would happen on the next page. Fair warning - this book is heavier than Twilight. It will answer some questions and leave you with dozens more.

Twilight - Stephenie Meyer

Twilight was the first book of my reading spree for the year. I have a habit of having big reading spurts and then slowing down a little. Now that my baby is a toddler, perhaps my reading level will stay a little more consistent. In part, I can attribute my current reading spree to Stephenie Meyer's Twilight.

I'd heard about the books after I saw a preview for the upcoming movie. The movie looked interesting but I was unsure if I wanted to read the books. Sometimes I feel silly carrying around the latest "it" book simply because it is the latest "it" book. I happened to be wandering the mall one day when I saw Walden's Books offering a Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal. The sign was stuck right on top of the Twilight display.

To be honest, I definitely judge books by their covers. Unless I already know about the author, usually I will pick up a book new to me because of the cover. Man, I have to say, I LOVE the Twilight Saga covers. Those are some of the prettiest covers I've seen. As you've probably noticed from my blog, I'm big into black with sharp, punctuated points of color. In the blog's instance I allow the book covers to serve as the majority of the color because they are well deserving of the eye's attention. The Twilight Saga is gorgeous, in my opinion because of the simple, symbolic covers.

As many have come to realize, the cover of Twilight is symbolic of the forbidden fruit. Twilight is the story of Isabella (Bella) Swan and a young man with ancient eyes, Edward Cullen. Bella is an awkward teenager, coming to live with her father in Western Washington in order to allow her eccentric mother the freedom to follow her new husband and his struggling baseball career. Bella isn't a huge fan of Forks, Washington until she meets a mysterious boy, one whose actions can't be explained through any normal logic.

Twilight is the story of Bella, Edward and their blossoming romance. I find the romance in it to be spectacular! It is a young adult book, so when I say "romance," I mean in the tamest form. Full of action, suspense and that inescapable sticky sweet love story, Twilight is sure to please any teenage girl's imagination. I'm not an expert on the male mind, but I've been reading this book to my husband in the car and he even likes the story - so perhaps this one is good for all genders and all ages!

Unlike some stories designed to continue past the first book, Twilight is perfect in that the end leaves the reader content. Yes, there is the note that more is to come, but the end is an end, giving us some much needed closure. I love books that do that!

I definitely give Twilight a solid A. As silly as it sounds coming from a grown woman, I do believe that Twilight has become one of my new favorite books. It's definitely one that I would like to have with me on one of those rainy afternoons, curled up in a chair with my favorite blanket.

Review Policy

I began this blog as a way to combine all my thoughts on the books that I read. Before, during, and after reading a book I always have a lot to say about it. When my coworkers started hiding under their desks as I entered the room, I decided it was time for an outlet for my thoughts. That idea grew into A Journey of Books. I'm proud to say that now my coworkers come to visit my thoughts here and no longer hide from me when I show up at work.

Many of the books that I read and review are books that I have sought out and purchased myself, but I am happy to and have accepted books for review as well. Blog tours, interviews and other promotional activities are welcomed.

What I Read
Typically I read Urban Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Paranormal Romance, but I typically find great enjoyment out of any genre including some nonfiction. I am also looking for more Young Adult books to review and would love to take a look at yours.  In general, if you have a question as to whether or not I will accept a book for review, it's best to just shoot me a quick email. In addition, you can take a peek at the books I have already reviewed. This list is located on the left sidebar. If you scan my GoodReads profile you can also see what kinds of books I have read, am currently reading or want to read. I do accept and welcome electronic works.

What Else I'm Looking For
If you are a cover artist or want to pass this on to your cover artists, I am currently looking for more cover artists to participate in UnderCover Friday, a Friday feature about book covers. I am for more artists to discuss their work for this feature.

When To Expect A Review
Reviews will go live anytime between the release date and two weeks prior to that. If you have a specific request for when you'd like the review to go up, please make sure to include this in your review request. Reviews are posted on A Journey of Books, GoodReads, LibraryThing, Amazon, Powell's Books, and Barnes & Noble if available. If you would like the review to go up elsewhere, let me know and we will get it there.

Traffic
When considering reviewers, the audience that the reviewer can reach is very important to an author. Feel free to view my site statistics from StatCounter or SiteMeter.

Contacting Me
Please contact me at ajourneyofbooks (at) gmail (dot) com. I promise to respond to your emails within 48 hours unless I have been run over by a crazy stampede of angry rhinos or raccoons.

Unsolicited Books
I will accept unsolicited eBooks, or print books from folks I have worked with in the past.  Basically, if you already have my mailing address, go for it.  I would appreciate an email letting me know to expect something; however, I understand busy schedules don't always allow for the time to send out emails.  You all know what I read, I trust your judgement.  If something does not quite fit the feel of the blog, as a professional courtesy to you, I will still feature the book here and discuss it a bit.  More detailed discussions will still go up around the web (Goodreads, LibraryThing, Amazon, Barnes & Noble).

Disclaimer
I am an Amazon Associate but as of yet have not received any compensation from Amazon. Any compensation that I may receive goes back into the upkeep of this blog (shipping). Many of the books that I review I have bought, but a percentage of the books I review have been sent to me for that purpose. Regardless of whether I have purchased the book or not, it still receives an honest review from me.

For books received for review - I am not required to write a positive review. The opinions I express are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Thanks for taking the time to check out A Journey of Books!

About

Hey all! Glad to see you stopped by!

I'm Cinnamon (yes, it's my real name), the main author of this blog. What you're looking at here is a place where I can share my thoughts on the books I've been reading.

A Little History

I grew up as an Air Force brat. My mom was in the service and every three years or so we would travel to a new state or country to live. Some people think that it's a tough life for a kid and at times it was, but I have so many fond memories of that time that they outweigh any of the negatives. One of the best parts about living in so many different places was the love for books I developed.

In some of the countries we lived in we had no access to English television programming. It was either watch the local T.V. which I couldn't understand, or recorded movies. Let me tell you, once you've seen Harry and the Hendersons for the 17th time, it gets a little boring. Lucky for me my mom was an avid reader. I can even still remember her old bookcase. It was one of those old fashioned ones with the glass paneled glass doors that closed in front. It was made of thick, heavy wood; good quality. I would sit and look at the bookcase, wishing I could pull down one of the many books but knowing that it would probably be wiser if I didn't. My mother was very protective of her books; they were some of her prized possessions. I had a spot on the lowest shelf with my books, but her books were strictly off limits. Unless she was reading them with me that is.

That's probably where I learned my love for books and reading. In our household books were sacred. You didn't bend the cover, roll the spine and for heaven's sake you did not dog-ear the pages! That's a lot like how I treat my books now. They are still sacred to me; a collection of someone else's thoughts and dreams that countless hours of work went into. The only real difference is that now my books sit on multiple cheaper bookshelves. They don't really make them like they used to.

One of the first books I remember reading is the all time favorite, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. After that it was the Anne of Avonlea series. Now, I'm sure that there must have been books in between, I just don't remember. I know that Anne of Avonlea was one of the first "real" books that I read at the young old age of 6 or 7 (based on the location I was living in). I loved those books. I wonder, if my mother had known what she was starting, would she have still encouraged my passion for read? Probably. Living in countries where the number of people you can actually understand is very limited, books were a good escape for me. From that point on, I was rarely without a book.

You Read Too Quickly!

I cannot tell you how many times I heard that statement. I guess it was justified though as I did go through books quite quickly in my teen years. First it was the Thoroughbred Series, Nancy Drew and the Magic the Gathering books. Yeah I know, the last one is a little dorky. What can I say, I was an only child and, well, a dork!

My mother loved going to the bookstore most weekends. We'd hang out, people watch, skim through various books and often she'd grab a book and curl up in a chair for a bit. Back then, being the bratty teen I was, all I wanted to do was go home. Now, living in a small town, I wish I had made better use of my time. Oh how I would love to have a cozy little bookstore around here! Anyway, the point was that during most visits I would leave with another book in whatever series I happened to be reading. I'd read it in the car and then once we got home I would plop down on my bed with the sun shining through the blinds and read, read, read. Usually, by the next day I'd be running to my mom pleading for another book. Often she'd oblige, but not without the lecture of how I was wasting my books by reading them too quickly. What can I say, I'm a fast reader. I don't skim, I just read quickly.

Isn't That Expensive?

My friends now say the same things my mother said back then. She doesn't bring it up as often as she used to because it's not her dollar funding my obsession now. I pay for the books myself, which is part of what people don't understand. "Well, why don't you go to the library? Isn't it cheaper?" Yes, I imagine the library is cheaper, unless you always forget to return your books. Then the fines start racking up. Plus, I never have good luck with the library. Usually, whenever I want to start a new series or am dying to find out what happens to our hero or heroine the library never has the right book. I'm not a patient person and I usually end up all twitchy until I found out what happens next.

There are very few things I like more than the look of all my books stacked up neatly on their shelves looking pretty. Contrary to popular belief, I do go back and reread my books. If it is something I would want to read again and again I wouldn't keep the book. It's possible that I'm just easy to please because I can't remember the last time I let anyone make off with one of my books. I'm sure many can relate to that. You're sitting at home reading a fantastic paperback, but it's cold and dreary outside and what you're really in the mood for is one of the sappy romances you have stashed upstairs. You go grab the book and the day is brighter. Perhaps I'm a pack rat. Maybe I have separation anxiety. Who knows. Either way, I love my books and I love to have my books. For keeps.

Why the Sudden Surge in Reading?

It's actually quite simple really. I read all the time as a kid. Toward the end of my high school experience it dropped off slightly as I got caught up in after school activities, but I can still remember reading Christopher Pike's The Last Vampire series over and over again. In fact, they are still some of my favorite stories. My reading really dropped off once I moved to college. You know, it's really not easy to read for pleasure when your professors demand that you read 200 pages a night for their classes (slight exaggeration). I frowned, sucked it up and got on with life. My books continued to hold a treasured place on their respective shelves, but remained main untouched while I progressed through 5 years of schooling including switching my major three times and then going for an additional teaching endorsement.

With graduation in sight I was all geared up to begin reading again. "Free time," my mind shouter in elation. Well, as fate would have it, free time just wasn't in the books. Nobody explained that after college I would have to start becoming a part of the "real world." That meant a job, which oddly enough, took up as much of my time as school did! Couple that with the fact that I found myself pregnant with our first child, my dreams of free time went soaring right out the window and splatted on the sidewalk.

Now, years after graduation and with a toddler who is at the manageable age of predictable naps and sleeping through the night, I again have the time to read. I picked up a pleasure book for the first time in years in January and made it my resolution to give in to my need for reading. So far I've done fairly well. With 30+ books under my belt as of April, I've kept my word to myself. For me, reading is more than just pleasure or obsession; it's my escape. With so much that's going on in the world - so much stress, violence, negativity - it's nice to be able to just sit back and wander off into someone else's world for a while. My brain has a little creative edge to it and although I don't quite know how to use that creativity to make anything that doesn't resemble a third grade art project, reading helps to stimulate it and use it.

What's A Journey of Books About?

Around the beginning of 2009 I began to think that I should do something with all the time I spend reading. I haven't changed much from when I was a child. I continue to read constantly and quickly. If I actually use the 3-4 hours per day I have to read, I can finish an average length book in a couple of days. I was spending roughly $6-$8 per book for 2 days of enjoyment and then I'd be on to the next book (at least until my rereads). I would usually go into to work and ramble on about my thoughts on the latest story to those that would listen, watching as their eyes glazed over and they started dreaming about playing in traffic instead of listening to me anymore. Really, I can't blame them. I don't actually know people outside of the Internet that share my interests in reading.

A Journey of Books is my journey to discover more about myself throughout the year. I still hold the belief that books change lives and I think that by examining our thoughts on what we read and our reactions, we can learn a lot about ourselves. The header of the blog is made up the book covers that I have read this year. My hope is to have the entire header covered by the end of the year. Maybe I'll even have more covers to add than I have room for. That would be fantastic!

So that's about it. If you want to know more about me, you're welcome to shoot me an email at ajourneyofbooks-at-gmail-dot-com. You can also click the contact tab at the top of the blog. If you want to know more about my various reading piles, feel free to look me up and even add me as a friend on GoodReads.

For now I'm out. Hope your day is lovely and the stories good.
